Make no mistake Part 2 was all about the PARTY. Making his first appearance in Liverpool for almost a decade, after memorable sell out shows at No Fakin’ and Chibuku, a Bona Fide Hip Hop Legend…

He’s the backbone of one of the greatest hip hop groups of all time.

He’s one of the dopest party rocking DJs on the planet.

He’s an original member of the Native Tongues and Gorillaz affiliate.

He’s about to drop his debut Solo LP ‘DJ Conductor’ featuring KRS-One, Freddie Foxxx, Fashawn and Mac Miller…

…and hey he’s nice on the mic.

Support once again came from our homies the No Fakin’ DJs.

This was a rare opportunity to see one of Hip Hop’s greatest in the intimate surroundings of the Shipping Forecast’s Hold.

Maseo absolutely rocked the house to give Liverpool a night that will be remembered for years. The old heads and the new crew crammed into the basement to see a true bona fide hip-hop legend (and all round good guy) throw a party for the MADNICE fam.

It was a special few days we had with Maseo, topped off with a dope party which left the whole MADNICE crew looking forward to the next 12 months of that old boom bap, hip-hop & beats… PEACE to everyone for showing out & supporting.

MADNICE Marauders 1st Birthday Part 1 feat. Kutmah, DJ Amir Abdullah, Abigail Wyles, Almighty Sion

To celebrate our first year of parties we continued to bring the freshest in Beats, Hip Hop, Funk, Jazz and Soul with an exclusive transatlantic line up where East Coast Crate Digging met The West Coast Beats Scene…

We started MADNICE with a J Dilla Tribute night back in Feb 2012 and we had to show some love once again. This year Almighty Sion, the latest signing to the Original Cultures Label, took us on a journey through their favourite Dilla Joints as well as their own material, heavily influenced by Detroits Finest!!!

Easing us into the party we enlisted the talents of one of the most exciting artists to emerge from the UK in 2012. Abigail Wyles has recently signed to Chase and Status’ MTA Records and is working on her debut LP. Her burnished folk-soul vocals and stripped back production are a massive diversion for the label and have made her one to watch for 2013. Abigail’s electronic soul ballad with Doc Daneeka ‘Toby Jug’ featured on Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide Family Compilation and was one of THE standout tracks of 2012, in any genre.

Kutmah made his MADNICE debut back in March 2012 and took the roof off the Shipping Forecast…his all encompassing set was a highlight of our year so we set out to get him back for our birthday. 2012 was a stellar year for Kutmah with shows around the world with his Brainfeeder friends & family, incredible mixes for Boiler Room, NTS Radio and Fact Magazine, and curating and mixing the second installment of Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide Family Compliation…we were stoked to have him back to kick off 2013 and the homie did not disappoint!

Finally, the man that closed the night with what went down as one of the illest sets ever heard at MADNICE so far and where to start with Amir Abdullah? One half of legendary vinyl excavating duo KON & AMIR, Amir is responsible for unearthing and sharing some of the world’s rarest and dopest records through his ‘On Track’ mixes, BBE Compilations, worldwide DJ sets and now through his own re-edits, his 180 Proof Label and his work with Detroit’s Strata Records and the world famous Wax Poetics label. We brought Amir over from NYC to take us on a musical journey through disco, jazz, funk & beyond… and he did just that. An unbelievable way to end the night and props to Amir for being a true gentleman!

For those that missed it we celebrated one year of MADNICE Marauders bringing that old boom bap, hip-hop & beats to the city of Liverpool earlier this year. The celebrations began somewhere at the turn of 2013 & continued right through March…

that’s our excuse for going MIA on this blog ish - things got crazy (in the best way possible) and we took our eye off the online ball. This is our unofficial return to the www dot.

“Lookin’ 4 Galt” Documentary
Finally! We found it online at last! The long awaited Lookin’ 4 Galt documentary is available here and now to watch in all it’s glory. Check it out as the french duo Gasface hit up New York City in search of the Canadian composer Galt McDermott who has been sampled hundreds (maybe thousands) of times by some of the illest crate digger’s and producer’s in hip-hop. A MUST WATCH!

B.J. Smith - “Umi Says/Runnin’” (Nu Northern Soul)
The homies over at Nu Northern Soul bring something very special to our ears with this latest B.J. Smith release. Take two incredible hip-hop tracks in the form of Mos Def’s “Umi Says” and the Pharcyde’s “Runnin’” and flip them on their head to offer up a slice of mellow musical brilliance that’s had the MADNICE crew buzzing all week long. Oh and for the record, none other than Mr Gilles Peterson played this beast on his Radio 6 show last weekend and labeled it as “The soundtrack to Sunsets around the world for years to come…” - say no more! We return for the new season with an exclusive all star transatlantic line up. Pioneer of the West Coast Beats scene meets UK Hip Hop legend in a venue that was always at the cutting edge of Hip Hop in Liverpool. Hailing from Los Angeles Ras G is a member of Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder stable and regular DJ at the legendary Low End Theory. He makes his Liverpool debut bringing his unique take on instrumental Hip Hop and dubbed out production that nods to the blunted boom bap of Madlib and the intergalactic jazz of Sun Ra.

Sharing the bill an artist who needs little introduction on these shores. The High Plains Drifter has been at the forefront of UK Hip Hop for over a decade and remains the freshest, most relevent homegrown wordsmith and producer. His latest LP ‘Dragon of an Ordinary Family’ and work with the likes of Kidkanevil and OM Unit has garnered support from DJs like Hudson Mohawke and Gilles Peterson, sharing stages with everyone from Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry to MF Doom.

Rounding off the bill we have YNR Stable mate and all round Hip Hop Junkie Micall Parknsun, ITF Turntable Champion Jazz T, Madnice Resident Sert One with his new live set and Bolts and Kwinzola bringing the turntable support.
